The Red Crow has a location second to
none for wildlife viewing: It sits on five acres of old growth forest
and overlooks a provincially designated wildlife sanctuary known as the
Tofino flats. The property is home to a pair of nesting eagles and a
pair of great blue herons, and is part of the foraging territory of a
murder of ravens, and another of crows. A family of river otter plays
and fishes in the shallow estuaries in front of the guest house and, in
spring and summer, the black bears scour the shoreline for crabs and
berries. In August it is not uncommon to see up to 50 great blue heron
feeding in the estuaries and during spring and fall the shallows and
eelgrass flats are a ruckus of innumerable varieties of migrant ducks
and geese.
